Once you've tried your first swatches and shapes, a few easy ideas can help you keep going. Choose something small, simple and close to you, and paint a little at a time.
What can I paint next?
- What's on your table: a mug, a piece of fruit, a plant or your morning coffee.
- Something from outside: a leaf, a flower from your garden, a tree or the sky from your window.
- The seasons: pumpkins and autumn leaves, snowflakes and snowmen, spring blossoms or summer fruit.
- Your pets and favorite animals: start with a simple bird, a fish or your cat's sleeping shape.
- Food: watermelon slices, lemons, cupcakes and strawberries are bright and fun.
- Memories: a place from a trip, a view from a photo or a favorite flower.
How can I keep practicing?
- Paint the same thing twice. The second try is almost always better, and it's lovely to compare.
- Pick a theme for a week. For example, one flower or one fruit a day.
- Try a new technique each time. One day a soft wet-on-wet sky, another day crisp leaves.
- Follow a tutorial. Step-by-step guides take the guessing out of it.
