How can I paint with my child? Tips for families

Painting together is a lovely way to spend time as a family. Our kit is suitable for children aged 6 and up, and younger painters enjoy it most with an adult nearby to help.

How do I set up?

  1. Cover the table. A placemat, newspaper or old towel makes cleanup easy.
  2. Dress for mess. Our paints are water-based and washable from clothes when washed right away, but an old T-shirt is always a good idea.
  3. Fill the water brush for them. Show your child how a gentle squeeze sends water to the tip. A water brush also means no cup of water to tip over.
  4. Give everyone a brush. If you're painting side by side, extra water brushes are available. See "Can I buy paints, brushes, or refills on their own?"

What can we paint together?

  • Color swatches: paint a little square of each color, then mix two and see what appears.
  • Rainbows and stripes: great for practicing brush control.
  • Traced shapes: trace around a leaf, a cookie cutter or a hand, then fill it with color.
  • Wet-on-wet magic: brush clean water on the page and drop in colors to watch them spread.
  • The same subject, side by side: it's fun to see how differently everyone paints it.

What helps keep it fun?

  • Keep sessions short, about 20–30 minutes for younger children.
  • Praise the colors and the effort, not just the result.
  • Let them choose their own colors.
  • Wipe the palette with a damp cloth afterward, and remind little helpers not to wash or soak it.
