You don't need to draw perfectly to paint a sweet animal portrait. Start with simple shapes, paint light colors first, and add the details your pet is known for at the end.
How do I paint an animal step by step?
- Pick a clear photo. Choose a photo of your pet with good light, where you can see the face and body shape clearly.
- Sketch simple shapes. Use a light pencil: a circle for the head, an oval for the body, triangles for ears and lines for legs and tail.
- Paint a light base layer. Cover the whole animal in its lightest color, leaving white paper for any white fur or a shine in the eyes.
- Add the main markings. While the base is still damp, drop in darker patches like spots or stripes, so they blend softly like fur.
- Let it dry, then add shadows. Paint a slightly darker color under the chin, the belly and behind the legs to give the body shape.
- Finish with details. Once everything is dry, use the very tip of your water brush to paint the eyes, nose and a few fur strokes.
How do I make it look like my pet?
- Focus on one or two things that make them special, like floppy ears, a white patch or a fluffy tail.
- Get the eyes right. A small dot of white paper left in each eye makes them look alive.
- Don't paint every hair. A few strokes in the direction the fur grows are enough.
Good to know
- Practice the head on a scrap page first.
- A loose, simple painting often feels more like your pet than a very detailed one.
