eBike Software Updates & Tuning Kits

Before updating your eBike's firmware, read this guide to understand how it may affect your tuning kit.

The Short Version

Updating your eBike's motor firmware may block or disable your tuning kit. We recommend avoiding firmware updates unless absolutely necessary.

What You Need to Know

  • Firmware upgrades can remove tuning compatibility

  • Tuning is only guaranteed to work with the firmware version available at time of purchase

  • A blocked tuning kit due to a firmware update is not covered under warranty

Our Recommendation

We recommend avoiding firmware updates – especially through service centres – unless absolutely necessary. Most updates are optional, and a working eBike doesn't usually need one.

If your bike is working fine, there's usually no reason to update. Service centres may update your firmware automatically during a routine service, so let them know you'd prefer to skip the update if possible.

Bosch Software Updates

Our VOLspeed and Speedbox tuning kits for Bosch motors are fully compatible with the latest17.16 software update.

However, we are unable to guarantee compatibility with future Bosch software updates. Bosch regularly releases new firmware versions, and any future update could potentially block tuning functionality.

To protect your tuning kit:

  • Disable automatic updates in the eBike Flow app

  • Decline firmware updates at service centres

  • Contact us before updating if you're unsure

Other Motor Brands

The same advice applies to all motor brands including Shimano, Yamaha, Specialized, and Giant. Manufacturers regularly release firmware updates that can affect tuning kit compatibility.

Always check with us before updating your firmware if you have a tuning kit installed.

What If My Kit Stops Working After an Update?

If your tuning kit stops working after a firmware update, unfortunately this is not covered under warranty.

In some cases, we may be able to offer a replacement kit designed for the new firmware version (if available), but this would be at additional cost.
