How to Identify Your eBike Motor

Last updated on Jan 27, 2026

To find the right tuning kit, first you'll need to know which motor powers your bike. Here's how to find out.

Step 1: Find Your Motor Type

Your bike's motor (sometimes called the "drive unit") is made by a company like Bosch, Shimano, Specialized, or Giant.

To find yours:

  • Check your bike's app – If your bike connects to a phone app (like Bosch eBike Flow or Shimano E-Tube), the motor info is usually shown there.

  • Search online – Google your bike's make, model and year followed by "spec". For example: "Cube Stereo Hybrid 2025 spec". The motor will be listed under "Motor" or "Drive System".

Common motors we see:

  • Bosch Smart System Gen5 or Gen4 CX

  • Bosch Gen4 (non smart system)

  • Shimano EP8 / EP800

  • Yamaha PW-X3

  • Brose Specialized 2.2 or 2.1 motors

  • Giant SyncDrive Pro2

Once you know exactly what motor is fitted on your bike. You can head over to our top picks section where we share all of our best recommendations for all of the most popular motors.

Optional step for Bosch Motors only – Check for a Rim Magnet

If your bike has a Bosch motor as was manufactured after 2024, we also need to know if it has a rim magnet sensor.

This is a small module attached to the rear wheel valve (or hidden inside the rear tire.

Have a look and let us know if you can see one – this helps us recommend the right kit variant.
